3min: TV is dead, long live TV
Copying US sites, such as Hulu, the Web Series / Webisodes site 3min.de is gaining popularity in Germany while traditional TV formats for younger people (such as MTV or Viva) are struggling. The site features custom-produced and ad-financed short webisodes in categories such as Fiction, Comedy, Real Life, Sport, Music, Film.
The trend also caught on for music TV with sites such as Putpat, still in beta testing, which caters to young people’s expectations, claiming: “we only have what you really want to see. No ringtone ads, no soap operas, only music. Music you really want to see, because you decide what is on, not a program director”
Based on market trends of a rising digital lifestyle in the younger demographic and their need for interactive TV, the site is targeted at predominantely urban teens and tweens, but is also showing to catch on with older viewers. The trend is aided in Germany by the fact that Tivo-like recording is not commonplace or available, which makes this type of on-demand entertainment attractive.
Looking at demographic data supports the trend. The average age of TV viewers for traditional TV public channels is 60 (!) and established private TV channels only skew somewhat younger (47 years). Looking at this data, it seems as though only older Germans living in rural areas actually seem to consume TV, while the younger, urban demographic expects interaction, influence on programming, specialty niche programs, on-demand content and participation which will be made possible by integrated partnerships with social networking sites such as Facebook and German equivalent StudiVZ.

Virgin trains: Finally some really, really cheesy and fun commercials!
Oh, thank god. I was getting so bored with the usual mediocre ad situation. If TV ads can do anything these days, it’s at least knock your socks off and make you smile. Probably not a KPI, but thanks anyway Virgin!!
Kudos to Duffy for seriously making my day enormsly cheesy. This is the only ad in the last year that I watched more than once, voluntarily. There’s one for lads and one for girls.
btw: freeze-frame second 0:08 and you’ll see Richard Branson cameo as a trolley driver.

ABC Nightline TV show realtime Twitter enabled
There have been a lot of discussions and questions about the utility and merit of Twitter recently. So it’s timely for Twitter to come out with some interesting news.
Based on the known practice to follow conferences on twitter while speakers are on stage, starting tomorrow, ABC’s “Nightline” is expanding its ongoing relationship with Twitter to develop “NightTline,” a new half-hour digital program hosted by the show’s anchors and correspondents that provides a forum for viewers to simultaneously discuss and debate the news of the day through the prism of Twitter.
After years of wait for interactive TV, Twitter could prove to be the new connective tissue that was missing. Should be an interesting trend to watch, as it might change TV formats and programming. I am especially interested in how they will manage incoming tweet and make it all part of a conversation.

The new world map
Our colleagues in Switzerland created this ad for a Hunger Charity. It shows the word based on how much people eat. A simple idea, compellingly executed and quick to the point.

Benjamin Button and Viagra
Just found this beautiful spot by Z Mexico, which is a great example of how cinematic ideas can inspire ad campaigns. Highly reminiscent of Benjamin Button, the Viagra couple becomes younger, instread of older. A simple communication idea, beautifully executed.
Thanks to Florian for the link!

Advertising for the boys
The agency Neogama /BBH, São Paulo, Brazil developed a commercial only for boys. Fairly sexist attitude even from my female point of view - but it’s amusing:
