Esquire: Augmented Reality & Print co-exist peacefully

What Esquire magazine has done here is a wonderful example how augmented reality can create interactive additional content for a print magazine. Not to mention the PR they can generate out of this issue! It goes to show that with a little thinking, print and digitla media can really profit from each other.

Read more about it here, or check out the interview with the issue’s creators:

Consumer & media interaction - a European study

Interesting study concerning the media consumption behaviour of consumers in Europe showing how and where they form their opinions and purchase decision.

According to the study two-thirds of German consumers under 25 want to interact with their favorite brands on socialmedia platforms. But they are more likey to double check facts uncovered online in the traditional media.

So as online media is fast growing and becoming a part of our lives - it still misses credibility if the only source of information. Online advocacy (user reviews and recommendations) is the most influential source if information and is up to 26% and even more important then recommendation from (real-live) friends and family.

Another finding was that Germans - from all the surveyed countries -  are the least influenced by advertising. Which points out the importance of not doing something for but with people if you want to be a relevant brand in Germany.

Microsites are dead - long live the Microsites

Everbody wants to have a microsite where the user can experience the brand. Everybody wants to be on social media platforms. Everybody wants to have an integrated brand experiences. Together with our client Fiat, we created the Fiat Punto Evo Challenge where all of the above smartly work together.

Users have to collect codes and enter them online in their personal dashboard. The dashboard is a navigation tool and content box, that they take with them as they surf through all the social media platform sites.

The codes themselves are to collect from the dealers - where we put the code inside a Fiat Punto Evo, from Bluetooth Posters, from banners, Flickr, Facebook and YouTube. Hints of where the codes can be found are delivered to the user via SMS or E-Mail. If you are on the run - you can play the Punto Evo Challenge with the mobile version of the site.

The high number of registrations tells us we are doing something right. So Microsite are not dead, but they have to adjust to new times and be a part of the sites and channels people are using. I guess they can live on afterall.

It’s an egg, it’s a navigation - no it’s superwebsite

nuovadesignlab-300x164 Its an egg, its a navigation - no its superwebsite

I love this website from the Italian Design/Think tank / Architecture office N’ouva. This egg-navigation is just so playful and engaging that just out of curiosity I clicked on every menu point. Have fun checking it out!

If you have from anglizismen the nase voll…

Germans are not as fanatic about preserving their language as the french are, but every now and then you have this word that you just can’t properly translate into German. Or maybe you want to know if there is a german word for Hedge Fond. Do not worry lovers and supporters of the german language rescue is near with this wonderful service I found online called the Anglizsmen Sprachberatung. Qualified Sprachwissenschaftler will render their services for free for those hard to translate words. Curious to hear from your translation requests…

Walkman embarrassment

370622288_7f737bb862_o Walkman embarrassmentFunny adage from Wired: Check out what happens when you make your 13 year old replace his iPod with a Sony Walkman.

I wish they had continued the “study”. I am sure that in parts of Berlin this could have spawned a retro-trend.

The Internet? Isn’t that for techno-geeks?

In this awesome video, the promise of the Internet in the good old days of the 1990’s is reawakened. Enjoy it and bask in the nostalgia of the beginning of the last gold rush era, called DOTCOM.

TED: Can Design Save Newspapers?

Recently I attended a panel discussion between journalists and bloggers about the future or lack thereof for newspapers. The journalists calling the bloggers politically irrelevant and egocentric, with the bloggers retorting back at the journalists that they are stuck in the past and unavailable for their audience. And so on and so on… Even though it was quite interesting - there was obviously no easy answer or solution for this.. Or is there?
Watch this wonderful video on TED from Jacek Utko, a Polish designer, who did not only redesign a newspaper - but thereby significantly raised the circulation of these newspapers. What struck me here was that the correlation between Design and economic success is quite obvious. He found a niche where he could make a difference with good communication design and went for it. Designers rule dude!

Augmenting reality - almost

I have often though how great it would be to photoshop bad weather away, or to enhance reality just like I can enhance images on the computer. Well, here’s a guy who’s coming close - augmenting and enhancing images from a live webcam with renderings. It’s not perfect  and polished yet - but I think it’s a fascinating experiment to be watched closely. And if you cannot change reality - at least you can change the image of reality… More details about this here>

Every little thing you do is magic…

Remember back in the times when everyting was magical? Back when you were building rivers and lakes out of mashed potatoes and sauce until your mother told you to stop? When you were playing in imaginary worlds even you were in your parents living room?

Seeing Magadelan Bors images reminded me of this time. Her photographs reveal hidden worlds that are only in our (and her) imagination. Thanks for showing them to us again and reminding us that everything can be magic if only you look right….
